Coaching FAQ’s
What is a coach?
According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is defined as a partnership with clients in a thought provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
What is the difference between coaching and therapy?
Both therapists and coaches ask their clients questions, however therapists tend to ask more open-ended questions that may lead to new discoveries while coaches ask questions that will lead to goal-oriented, future-oriented answers. In coaching, the process is oriented towards actions and results, while therapy is more introspective and tends to focus on the past.
Coaching is not a medical, mental health or psychotherapy service nor is it reimbursable by insurance companies. Coaching cannot substitute for, and is not an alternative to, medical or other healthcare diagnosis and treatment when a medical or mental health condition or illness is present. If you struggle with a mental health condition, anxiety or depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress or mood disorder, psychotherapy would be indicated to address and treat those symptoms. Some people choose to have both a therapist and a coach.
How do I begin the coaching process?
I offer a free 20 minute phone consultation where you may share your reasons for seeking help, ask any questions you have, and we can begin to determine how I can help. We can also communicate via email. I will then forward you some documents to review and complete in preparation for our first appointment. All services are then tailored to fit your individual needs.
Is coaching confidential?
No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client.
However, due to being a mandated reporter there are some exceptions which include:
Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. As a mandated reporter I am required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person, I am required to notify the police.
If a client intends to harm themselves, I will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate or if there continues to be safety concerns, additional measures may need to be taken.
What forms of payment do you take?
I accept credit/debit card payment, including payment through Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo. If meeting in person, I also accept cash or check.
What are some of your policies?
When we begin our work together, you will be asked to sign a coaching policy agreement. I require a minimum of 24 hours notice via telephone message, text, or email if you need to cancel. Failure to provide this notice will result in a full charge for the appointment.
